I ordered and installed an SSL certificate for two new sites on a Azure Virtual Server. Things went smoothly… so I thought. When I went to victorious pull up the page through the https:// protocol I got a disheartening delay and then finally the message that the site can’t be reached before it took too long to respond.
I pursued a number of dead ends. The problem finally turned out to be an issue in the Network Settings for the Virtual Machine in the Azure Portal. We had allowed inbound HTTP traffic for Port 80, but there wasn’t a comparable setting for Port 443. I clicked on Create port rule and added a new inbound port rule for 443. Once I did that my newly purchased SSL certificate could successfully serve its purpose.
