This evening my father had the need to do a mass resize of hundreds of images for his work. He was on the verge of having an employee go out and retake photos with more antiquated camera settings, when I intervened and told him I would take a look. I had assumed I would be downloading some kind of freeware or exploiting a plug-in with Gimp, but it turns out thanks to the Windows Live Photo Gallery already installed on my Windows 7 laptop, I had everything I needed to do resize entire folders worth of images.

A great big hat tip to Rob Margel who wrote up the instructions on how to do it in 2009… for his own father!

Had to look this one up twice now, so time to blog it!

A Stored Procedure of ours accidently got deleted when we ran an Update Model from Database… through our Entities.edmx file. I updated again and added the Stored Procedure back in. However, when I went to add the related Add Function Import… I got the following error message:

Verify that the FunctionImport name is unique.

Although the Stored Procedure was accidentally removed, its related Function Import was still there. What I had to do was in my Model Browser, I expanded EntityContainer:Entities->Function Imports. Then I right clicked on the old Function Import and selected Delete.

After that, when I went back to add my Function Import, all was well.

Hat Tip Verify that the FunctionImport name is unique.

We recently installed Qualtrax on a new IIS 7 server and put it under the scope of a SSL certification so users had to access the site through the https:// protocol. When they tried to use the Automatic File Transfer tool, however, they were getting the following error:

Internet Explorer cannont download AutoFileTransfer.aspx from …

Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or not found.

This problem actually isn’t confined to Qualtrax. As behind the scenese, when you are using the Automatic File Transfer tool, Qualtrax sends you a file in a proprietary format (Extension .qtxxml) which the Automatic File Transfer tool on the client machine will process.

First I made sure that the .qtxxml extension was included in my valid MIME types on the Internet Information Services 7.0 on my web server. That didn’t fix the issue, so some research was in order and this Microsoft Knowledgebase Article explained the behavior:

Internet Explorer file downloads over SSL do not work with the cache control headers

When files are sent down through an SSL connection to Internet Explorer with the “Cache-control:no-store” or “Cache-control:no-cache” header, the issue occurs. Internet Explorer acts like the site isn’t even there.

I found a couple of fixes.
1) You can do the registry update suggested in the Knowledgebase article.
2) You can use Firefox or Chrome
3) Upgrade Internet Explorer to version 9.

I’ve run across this in my MVC/Entity Framework code a couple of times. Figure I better document the solution here so it is easy to find. Hat Tip to the EF 4: Removing child object from collection does not delete it – why? article on StackOverflow.

Basically, I had some child objects off of a parent that I wanted to clear off or remove before saving them fresh. When I did:

ParentObject.ChildObjects.Clear();

I was getting the following error:

System.InvalidOperationException occurred Message=The operation failed: The relationship could not be changed because one or more of the foreign-key properties is non-nullable. When a change is made to a relationship, the related foreign-key property is set to a null value. If the foreign-key does not support null values, a new relationship must be defined, the foreign-key property must be assigned another non-null value, or the unrelated object must be deleted.

What is going on is the Clear and Remove method remove the Relationship. They don’t remove the Child Object itself…and when the relationship is removed, the Child Object looks orphaned and has a Foreign Key issue.

So what you have to do is Delete the child object from your Object Context. To avoid Enumeration errors, I make a seperate list and remove it that way.

            List<ChildObject> children = ParentObject.ChildObjects.ToList();
            for (int i = 0; i < children.Count; i++)
            {
                try
                {
                    //Delete the Child Object from your ObjectContext
                    //(We have a wrapper function to do that
                    dataAccessor.Delete(children[i]);
                }
                catch
                {

                }
            }

Execution of user code in the .NET Framework is disabled. Enable “clr enabled” configuration option.

It seemed like the solution to this error would be found within the application code, but it was actually resolved in the SQL Server 2008 database. In the SQL Server Management Studio, I started a new Query for my database and ran the following:

sp_configure ‘clr enabled’, 1
go
RECONFIGURE
GO

After that, all worked well.

http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/webtech/020600-1.shtml
Note: EXEC can’t be used in User Defined Functions

2) How t0 Insert Data From Dynamic SQL into a Cursor
Define the cursor in your SQL code (ie ‘Declare users_cursor CURSOR FOR SELECT userId FROM users’ )

Last night Ryan and I were trying to watch a movie, but we had so many people using our wireless connection, we didn’t have ample bandwidth. So we connected to our LinkSys router and added a password to our connection. When the movie was done, we changed it back to an unsecure connection so our neighborhood kids could reconnect from their various homes.

This morning the XP machines were plagued with sporadic connections. When we tried to connect to our wireless network, it would sit there trying to refresh the IP Address. “Waiting for the network” it would tell me or “Acquiring IP Address”.

It would look like it would never connect, but in reality it did. While the Wireless Network Connection window was still toiling, I could pull up websites and accomplish work. After a while the connection would drop. I would go View Available Wireless Networks again and watch it flounder to connect. Meanwhile I would refresh my web browser and continue my work.

I was finally able to eradicate the issue completely thanks to a post by Dell Bo on eggheadcafe.com. An excerpt:

1. Right click the windows wireless network in the system tray, click "View
Available Wireless Networks" and then click "Change Advanced Settings"
(bottom right corner of the Window).

2. Click the "Wireless Networks" tab and remove the wireless network from
the Preferred networks list and reboot the machine.

3. Re-connect to the wireless network.

After re-connecting the issue was resolved.

Hope this helps someone.

A quick screenshot of the Remove button referred to above:

Note: I did not have to reboot the machine in Step 2. I merely reconnected and all was well. Dell Bo hoped that the advice would help someone. It helped me!

Today we had a kid from our Computer Literacy class surface with a broken Dell Latitude D610. Windows would not load up and any of the Safe Mode options (Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, etc). produced the same sad blue screen error:

STOP: c0000218 {Registry FIle Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable

I quickly found a very helpful Microsoft Knowledge Base article and I wanted to document so I can find it again easily.
How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

The HARDEST part was finding a Windows XP disk, but we finally found one and soon we were able to follow the instructions. During which, we also had to follow this article:

How to gain access to the System Volume Information folder

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309531/

Finally so I don’t lose the link, this one looks like it might come in handy one day:

How to obtain Windows XP Setup disks for a floppy boot installation

Now the kid’s computer is up and running again and all are happy! Especially me– following these steps taught me more about the registry and the built-in restore points.

A while back, I wrote about reading data from a TCP/IP Stream from a VB.NET application. Since that article, our parameters have changed slightly. Now, we are reading a continuous TCP/IP stream, one that is filled with extra spaces and blank characters. It seemed simple enough to fix. Trim(), right?

Well, to my dismay, I saw that my “trimmed” strings were still filled with spaces. In fact, they were identical to the untrimmed version. What gives?

Untrimmed String
“500 G       ”

Trimmed String
“500 G       ”

It turns out there is a Null Character (Chr(0)) in there at the end.

What I had to do is first replace Chr(0) with an empty string and then I could trim. Reversing the order of operations (trimming first and then replacing the Chr(0)) did not work. Code to reproduce and correct the problem is below:

Dim strTemp as String
strTemp = "Test     " + Chr(0)

strTemp = strTemp.Trim()
'-- Uh oh-- that above call was USELESS strTemp is still "Test " + Chr(0)

strTemp = strTemp.Replace(Chr(0), "")
'-- Getting closer - strTemp is now "Test "

strTemp = strTemp.Trim()
'-- And now we are where we want to be-- strTemp is now "Test"
